Look out! The bears are back

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Hungry bears are now emerging from hibernation around the Lower Mainland. At least four bears have been spotted around the North Shore already.

Many people aren’t expecting to see them just yet; maybe that’s because of the cool weather. But Tony Webb with the North Shore Black Bear Society is urging people to be bear aware.

“They are coming out of hibernation, so they are looking for food and will eat anything that’s available,” he explains.

There are bylaws in several municipalities when it comes to garbage collection, but Webb says it’s a good idea to not put your trash out before the morning of pickup. He says bears are basically “noses on four legs” and the smell of bird seed and baby diapers can also attract the animals.

“Use common sense in not having any smells around,” he advises.

There have also been some sightings in the Tri-Cities so far this season. You can find more information at northshorebears.ca.
