VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – From WagJag and Social Shopper to Groupon and LivingSocial — Group-buying sites are getting more and more popular. But we don’t usually have other people in mind when we shop.
We are shopping for someone one we love — ourselves, according to a new Vision Critical survey.
Antonio Rodriguez with OneSpout.com says only about 20 per cent of us are buying for someone else. “Nearly half of Canadians have now visited a group-buying site and this phenomenon has risen very quickly.”
Rodriguez adds one year ago, the industry was relatively unknown, but now it’s becoming a part of everyday life. He explains many folks like the sites because it allows them to try or buy something they normally wouldn’t think about.
“People are really driven by being able to get these new experiences,” he explains. “But at the same time, they’re very cost-conscious.”
So, what are we buying? Recreational activities, gym, or restaurant deals are the big ones. One in ten of us have bought a cosmetic procedure.
