Kootenay Ice win the WHL title

PORTLAND, OR (NEWS1130) – The Kootenay Ice have won their third Western Hockey League championship. The Ice defeated Portland 4-1 in Game Five, to win the series 4-1 as well. Kootenay also won the title in 2000 and 2002.

The Cranbrook based franchise won the Memorial Cup with the 2002 squad.

Kootenay won 16 games and only lost three games in the post season. Nathan Lieuwen was the goalkeeper for all of the victories and was named MVP of the playoffs. Matt Fraser scored a pair in the win, and led all playoff goal scorers with 17 lamplighters.

Kootenay wins the Ed Chynoweth Cup. Chynoweth was the longtime WHL and CHL President. He became the owner of the expansion Edmonton Ice and moved the team to Cranbrook in 1998. Chynoweth died in April of 2008. His son Jeff is the President and GM of the club.

The Ice move on to play in the Memorial Cup, which begins May 20 in Mississauga, Ontario.
