Water quality levels in local oceans and lakes

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Despite this so-so weather, people are still taking a dip in the ocean and lakes.

A medical health officer posts warning signs when the coliform level exceeds 200; that’s when the risk of infection increases.

A water quality report from Vancouver Coastal Health says Second and Third Beaches have readings of 39 and 29 while English Bay and Sunset are almost at the 100 level.

Kits, Jericho, Locarno, and Spanish Banks are all in the high 30s, so there are no problems there. Beaches in North and West Van are also fine. Even Wreck Beach, which sees higher coliform levels due to its proximity to the Fraser River, has low coliform levels.

The only place to avoid is Trout Lake; it’s good for sandcastles but not for a swim. You can blame it on the birds.
