Big third quarter for Burris pushes Stamps by BC

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Calgary quarterback Henry Burris threw three third quarter touchdowns, including a 61 yard toss to Nik Lewis to give the Stampeders a 34-32 win in the Lions home opener at Empire Field.

It was a low scoring first half, as the visitors led 7-6 after 30 minutes. The two teams combined for 53 points and seven touchdowns in the final two quarters. Calgary was up 28-20 after three quarters.

BC scored the only two TD’s in the final period. Tim Brown scored on a six yard rush and Travis Lulay had a five yard scamper with 1:08 left. Instead of kicking the convert after each touchdown, coach Wally Buono went for the two point conversion each time. BC failed on both attempts.

Veteran kicker Paul McCallum did have a chance to win the game, but his 57 yard field goal attempt fell short.

Lulay had two TD tosses and two interceptions, while Burris was picked off three times to go with his three touchdown passes.

Calgary is now 1-1, while the Leos are 0-2 and go to Edmonton on July 16.
