VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The flyers are piling up at the front door and the back-to-school sales are everywhere. And surprisingly for some parents, you may be able to save a little cash while stocking up on school supplies.
Whether you’re crossing the border or staying around town to do your shopping, Jeff Schwartz with Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada says keep an eye out for the sales, but don’t feel pressured to grab everything at once.
“Don’t buy too much because you never know what you’re going to be provided with on the first day of school and the last thing you want to do is spend more money on something that you would have already gotten.”
He says dollar stores are also a cheap place to find what you need. And remember the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. You can go through what you have from last year before hitting the stores.
Schwartz adds back-to-school shopping is also a great way to teach your child the value of a dollar. He recommends helping your child make a list and budget an amount for each item.
“So, involving them in the process, putting numbers on it. They can make some of those decisions themselves and it’s amazing what they can come up with.”
