VANCOUVER(NEWS1130) -Forty-seven thousand mattresses or box springs have been recycled since they were banned from Metro Vancouver landfills at the beginning of the year.
Greg Valou with Metro Vancouver says if you stacked them up, they’d reach one and a half times the height of Mount Everest. “Mattresses and box springs are composed of multiple materials including wood, metal, fabric and plastic, all of which are recyclable once separated. Recycling operations disassemble mattress by hand and are typically able to divert over 95% of the materials in each mattress from disposal.”
It will cost you $20 dollars to recycle a mattress.
Three mattress recycling companies have established themselves in the region employing over 45 people.
