VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a new tool to help the buyer beware. Mounties are listing homes and businesses where grow-ops and meth labs have been busted as part of the RCMP’s Marijuana Grow Initiative.
It’s useful for people looking to buy a home or a commercial property, says Chan Dara, the RCMP’s National Marijuana Grow-Op Coordinator.
“If I’m a buyer of a residence and I asked a seller if the house was a grow-op, honest citizens will disclose that information and we’re not worried about that. We’re worried about the people that won’t disclose that information.”
You can match your prospective address against a list of dozens of properties.
The list shows how many plants were ripped from a grow-op or whether dangerous chemicals were removed. Dara says most people know about the associated crime dangers, but may not know about the health and safety risks of moving into one of the properties.
The only catch is it only shows properties that have been busted since 2010. Dara adds police are constantly busting marijuana grow-ops across the country, but nationally the number of operations is remaining the same.
The Marijuana Grow Initiative aims to reduce that number while also boosting community engagement.
