Bed bug problem growing

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – They’re nasty, irritating bloodsuckers but should we be afraid of bed bugs? An expert weighs in on how much of a threat the little critters actually pose to people.

They’ve been found in several Lower Mainland libraries over the last couple months, reminding people of how easily they can spread.

Provincial medical health officer Dr. Perry Kendall says they’re not going to hurt anyone but that doesn’t mean it’s nice to have them in your home. “I don’t think there’s any reason to be afraid of them because they don’t transmit any diseases. But I think they are certainly a nuisance and a real pain to get rid of.”

He says they’re worse than scabies and headlice because bed bugs can live for long periods of time when they’re not on a human body.

Kendall is also calling for hospitals to be vigilant to prevent infestations.
