Vision Vancouver says it will be party to end homelessness

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Gregor Robertson announced Vision Vancouver‘s platform on housing and homelessness today, outlining several steps his party would take to tackle the problem of affordable housing.

Robertson wants to use city-owned assets to build 38,000 homes in the next 10 years, and says the problem of homelessness can be solved with permanent housing.

Robertson’s plan includes increasing support for emergency shelters and senior’s housing, and raising landlords’ duties so that safe and clean living standards are a given.

He hopes to create a “rent bank” so people can take out a loan if they fall behind in their payments. Robertson also wants to support home ownership, saying over half of Vancouverites rent their homes.

Vision Vancouver says it will be the party to end homelessness in the city. Both Robertson and incumbent Vision Councillor Kerry Jang commented on the NPA’s position on housing.

Jang says the NPA is failing in its attempts to address the issue.

Suzanne Anton and the NPA would have a mother choose between paying the rent and feeding her children,” he says. “We don’t do that at Vision Vancouver. We’re very clear.”

Robertson says three years after Vision was elected, there are now 650 fewer people sleeping on the streets of Vancouver.
