Civic Election Spotlight: Burnaby/New Westminster

By

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan is up for his fourth term as mayor.  And his party, the Burnaby Citizens Association, says it will focus on livable communities, low taxes and fiscal responsibility, community safety, and transportation.

Corrigan, who has been on city council for 23 years, says his key opponent this time around is Tom Tao with Team Burnaby.

“My vision as mayor is to ensure Burnaby benefits from job creation and economic growth while protecting the city’s [environment] and economic choice,” says Tao.

All eight Burnaby councillors are running for re-election, while 12 others also want a seat.  Voter turnout in 2008 was relatively low but so far this year advance polls turnout has been promising.

New Westminster

New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright is also up for his fourth term for the city’s top job and he says there are a number of issues that need to be addressed ahead of Saturday’s vote.

“Well there’s more than one, because we’re a hub community.  Transportation is one.  I certainly want to be looking at the hospital situation with Royal Columbian Hospital.”

Smart taxation and smart spending are also on his list too.

His main challenger, James Crosty, wants to see a new Pattullo Bridge built and reduced congestion in New Westminster’s busy downtown core.  Six councillors are running for-re-election as well.
