Local crews raise money for fallen firefighter

ENDERBY (NEWS1130) – Chilliwack firefighters have raised $3,000 for the family of the Enderby firefighter who died in an explosion Thursday.  Dan Botkin’s funeral will be held tomorrow.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the ceremony at Enderby Memorial Arena.

Over 750 firefighters from across the province are registered to be there, including a bus-load from Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Mission.

“We rely on each other as firefighters so often in times of peril just to scratch each others back and look after one another so when there’s a loss of a brother or sister, it really hits home,” said Jeff Ullyot with Chilliwack Fire.  “They work hard, safety is always on their minds and everyone wants to make it to the next day and it’s really tragic when something like this happens.”

That’s why his department decided to give all proceeds from the sales of their calendars to the Dan Botkin Memorial Fund.  About 250 calendars have been sold since Botkin’s death.

Other fire departments and many credit unions are accepting donations as well.
