CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – A man convicted of manslaughter in the stabbing death of an Abbotsford teen three years ago has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Amrit Gill had some time knocked off his sentence because of time he already spent in custody.
His victim, 18-year-old Harvey Hans, was a Grade 12 student at Rick Hansen Secondary School.
He had been drinking with some friends in May, 2008 when the group he was with got into a fight with another some other teens and a 15-year-old boy was punched in the face.
That boy’s older brother and some of his friends drove over to Hans’ home in Abbotsford, apparently looking for revenge.
“The attackers were waiting to set upon the victim as he returned home,” said Supreme Court Justice William Grist.
“He was immediately set upon by the young men waiting for him, in what can aptly be described as a swarming. The attack appears to have been a short and very violent event, involving a Taser and a knife. Mr. Hans was stabbed in the throat and subsequently died in hospital 10 hours later.”
Co-accused Shavinder Brar pleaded guilty to manslaughter last year and was also given a five-year prison sentence.
Two months were knocked off Gill’s sentence because of time served.
