VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The debate into whether governments should ban Muslim women from wearing veils shows no signs of cooling down.
While opposed to veils on principle, Maclean’s Magazine writer Anne Kingston has found the issue is more complicated than we think.
Her latest piece is titled “Who are we to judge?” and in the process of writing it, Kingston has found banning veils creates something of a no-win situation “in terms of marginalizing the women who are wearing it — the very women that are supposed to be protected here, which is questionable. And on the other hand, there are women who actively veil under religious observation.”
Human Rights Watch says bans violates the rights of those who choose to wear the veil and does nothing to protect those who are compelled to do so.
