Roadside memorial grows for teens killed in crash

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS1130) – The community of Maple Ridge is mourning two teenagers killed after a head-on crash early yesterday morning.  A makeshift memorial at the site of the crash has been built by friends for 17-year-old Dawson Spencer and 18-year-old Crystal Weaver.

On Sunday at around 2:30 a.m., the two were in separate cars that were involved in a crash on Dewdney Trunk Road at Dunbar Street.  One other person is in serious condition and three others have non-life threatening injuries.

There has been a huge outpouring of tributes on social media websites.  Friends and family have taken to Facebook to say they will never forget the two, and they were taken too early.

Several of the teens involved had links to theatre program at Garibaldi Secondary School.  Maple Ridge School Superintendent Jan Unwin says Weaver was a student at Garibaldi, while Spencer attended classes at Samuel Robertson Technical.

Unwin adds crisis management teams have been called in and administrators are preparing for this morning, to help people cope with the loss.

Police think speed was a factor in the crash.

CORRECTION: Victim’s name and age was incorrectly listed as Spencer Dawson, 19. It has been changed.
