Update: North Road reopened after gas leak

By

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Update: People have been allowed to return to their homes after a gas leak closed North Road on the Burnaby/Coquitlam border for several hours last night.

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart visited the scene last night and says maps should have been reviewed by work crews to help keep utility lines from being damaged. He says it’s not known if the maps were wrong, or if something else led crews to tear in to the gas line.

“We are going to identify what went wrong. We are going to make sure it doesn’t happen again because the communities have the right to expect that the gas service that goes through every street is going to be protected.”

People were allowed to return to their homes shortly after midnight.

Some people have been told to get out of their homes as repair crews deal with a gas leak on the Burnaby/Coquitlam border.

Kim Seale with the News1130 Air Patrol flew over the scene at North Road around Smith. “We’ve got at least 10 fire trucks down there, standing by — ambulances as well. We’ve also got [FortisBC] on-site; they’re dealing with that leak.”

“There are a lot of people trying to get home and it is disrupting traffic and people living in the area, where they’ve actually had to remove some people from apartments,” she adds.

An information centre has been set up at the Cameron Recreation Complex in Burnaby for people who live near or are trying to access area closed off by gas leak.

Police say North Road will be closed for several hours. Several buses have been rerouted around the closure.
