Canada needs unlikely comeback in Davis Cup tie with France

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canada will need a pair of upset victories on the final day of its tie with France to move on to the quarterfinals for the first time. Canada trails France 2-1 through the first three matches.

Yesterday’s doubles match saw Milos Raonic and Daniel Nestor team up for the Canadians. They fell 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 to Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra, giving the French the lead.

Raonic, of Thornhill, Ontario will take on the sixth-ranked player in the world in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the day’s first match.

The 21-year-old Raonic is currently ranked 29th in the world and has two ATP singles titles.

Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil will play in the finale. He’s scheduled to face Benneteau, but Gael Monfils, who sat out Friday’s singles match with an injury, may be ready to return if it turns in to a rubber match.

The loser of the tie will have to participate in a playoff with the other seven first-round losers to keep its spot in the World Group.
