Rally in protest of Missing Women Inquiry

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The families of Robert Pickton’s victims and women’s groups from the Downtown Eastside are rallying today in protest of the Missing Women Inquiry.

Critics are still frustrated and are calling the proceeding a “sham” because they don’t include the voices of the families or women’s advocates.

Rally organizer Lisa Yellow-Quill says the message about the fight for justice and ending the violence against women is getting lost with all of the focus on policing.

She explains supporters want to bring the attention back to the victims.  “To bring the issue back to the women who were murdered and missing because I think through the inquiry the focus of the murdered and missing women went off track with what was going on within the RCMP and VPD.”

Yellow-Quill hopes good will come out of the inquiry but has her doubts adding it will be all talk and no action.

“I think we’ve had many inquiries, we’ve had many commissions, and investigations into the root causes [but] there haven’t been any real or meaningful actions or changes.”

The rally is at West Georgia and Granville Streets today.

A women’s memorial march is expected to take place tomorrow in cities all over the country to honour those who have died due to violence physical, mental, emotional and spiritual abuse.
