VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It will be standing room only at the Orpheum Theatre this afternoon as a long-time activist and former city councillor is remembered at a public memorial.
Three thousand people are expected to honour the life and work of Jim Green.
Green was an American draft dodger born in Alabama. He came to Vancouver and is best known for his years of work to assist Vancouver’s less fortunate and make the Downtown Eastside, Strathcona and Chinatown neighbourhoods safer and more vibrant.
He eventually turned into the brain and brawn behind the Woodward‘s housing project.
Green ran for mayor twice, narrowly losing to Gordon Campbell in 1990 and Sam Sullivan in 2005. He won a seat on city council in 2002 with COPE when friend and colleague Larry Campbell occupied the mayor’s chair.
Green died two months ago on February 28 of cancer. He was 68.
The memorial runs from 1:30-3:30 p.m with doors opening at 12:30 p.m. MC’ing the event will be Jim’s friends Am Johal and Geoff Meggs. They will be joined by musical artists and speakers who knew Jim best.
