Out-of-control wildfire prompts evacuation order, alerts around Pemberton area

Wildfires are erupting across the province. Boston Bar residents have been evacuated while a new fire in Pemberton has sparked. Ceclia Hua and Joe Sadowski report.

An evacuation order has been issued for One Mile Park south of Pemberton, along with several other properties in the area of the out-of-control Signal Hill wildfire.

The Village of Pemberton says the order was issued to give crews safe working space to support wildfire response operations.

The evacuation alert was issued for parts of the village late Wednesday evening and updated Friday morning.

The Signal Hill wildfire was discovered Wednesday and is believed to be human-caused. As of Friday morning, it was burning at about 97 hectares, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says.

The province says it is bracing for more wildfire activity this week, as warm, dry weather conditions are expected to continue.

“Rising temperatures and low precipitation will further dry out available fuels, increasing the likelihood of wildfire ignition,” the BCWS said.

“Widespread convective activity is anticipated to bring lightning activity this week. While winds are anticipated to ease a little across B.C., strong gusts are expected to accompany thunderstorms as lightning potential increases through the week.”

The most up-to-date information about evacuation orders and alerts can be found on Emergency Info BC’s website.

On Friday morning, the BCWS, stated that increased winds and convective cells moving through the valley on Thursday ignited more fire activity.

As of Friday, just after noon, there are 57 firefighters assigned to the blaze and four helicopters delivering water through the air.

“Crews are working to secure the fire perimeter from Pemberton Creek to the southwest corner of the fire,” said BCWS.

Highway 99 remains open, but BCWS reminds drivers that there is no stopping within the wildfire area.
