Convicted killer looks to have murder conviction overturned

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Convicted killer Raminder Bhander will try and convince three BC Appeal Court judges to overturn his second-degree murder conviction on Wednesday.

Bhander was found guilty in the shooting death of Sunny Bains in January 2008. He was charged with first degree murder but a jury convicted him of the lesser charge, which carries ten years mandatory prison time, as opposed to 25.

The whole thing started when he got into an argument with Bains’ common-law partner at a restaurant and later gunned him down at a townhouse in Surrey. Bhander admitted he shot Bains, but claimed all along he was acting in self-defence.

Bhander has a history with the court system, which could not be reported while the trial was going on. He testified in the trial of Ripudaman Singh Malik, one of the men found not guilty of the Air India bombing.
