Protecting your home during a summer vacation

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you’re getting ready to head off on vacation, North Vancouver RCMP have some advice.

Vacation Home Check is a new program aimed at keeping your home safe while you’re away.

RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong says once you sign up, volunteers will drive by your house when you’re out of town.

“They’ll check your residence for lights, open windows, anything suspicious and report it to your designated contact person or the police if that is necessary.”

The program is staffed by volunteers, so it won’t cost the force anything. But De Jong says drivers can’t leave their vehicle, so they are not able to check apartments or condos.

“We truly believe that this preventative program will be part of the RCMP’s Safe Homes Safe Communities initiative,” adds De Jong. “Summer is the time when people go away, leaving this houses vulnerable and we encourage everybody to be extra vigilant.”

De Jong believes doing things like using timers for your lights and making sure newspapers or mail don’t pile up can also cut down on summer break-ins.
