Man dead after work site accident in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A man in his 40s has been killed in a work site accident at the Lafarge Plant on Kent Avenue in south Vancouver.

WorkSafe BC says he was buried in a pile of gravel and it’s believed he died from crushing injuries.

Lafarge issued a statement confirming the fatal accident on the ready-mix site involved a subcontractor employee.

News1130 caught up with an employee who works at a competing concrete plant nearby who is deeply affected by the tragedy.

“The worse thing that can happen to you is die on the job, while you’re working…you’re better off dying fishing or hunting or something,” says Kirk.

He’s a veteran in the industry and knows about how dangerous it can be.

“We had one [a death] at our plant, it’s got to be 30 years ago now, but you know that’s still one too many. It’s too bad that’s for sure.”

The company hasn’t released details on who the person is and will be doing a full investigation into the events leading up to the death.

Paramedics were called to the scene and police were on site throughout the morning speaking with employees.
