Man involved in crash with cop car charged with murder

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The man arrested last month after crashing into a cop car in Vancouver has now been charged with murder, connected to a stabbing hours before the accident.
Forty-seven-year-old Lance Wraye Standberg of Burnaby was arrested the morning of August 9th, hours after 57-year-old Ronald William March was stabbed in an alley off of Renfrew, not far from Renfrew Park.
After the crash, Standberg was charged with fleeing from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and has been in custody ever since.
VPD Cst. Brian Montague says Standberg was not known to police, but investigators became aware of him sometime between the stabbing and the crash.
“He was a person of interest,” says the officer. “He was arrested not to far away from the crime scene.”
The murder charge against Standberg was approved this morning, six weeks to the day after the stabbing.
“The investigation of these things take time,” explains Montague. “So, while Mr. Standberg has been in custody on the driving-related charges, our investigators have been working hard to compile a report for Crown council.”
Montague is not speaking about the motive behind the killing or evidence against the suspect because the case is before the courts. Standberg has a court date October 2nd and will remain in custody at least until that date.
Standberg was treated for minor injuries after the crash, but the officer was not hurt.
