VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You’re fearless, the best skater on the team and looking for a new challenge. Why not try racing down a 535-metre urban ice track with jumps, bumps and speed?
Red Bull Crashed Ice is looking for local contestants to compete in Quebec City.
Graeme Treweeke sped down the course last year, and says overall it’s not as violent as you may think.
“If you pick a line and a guy crosses your line, then you are allowed to make contact, but you’re not allowed to grab or tug or pull,” Treweeke explains.
He says it’s a pretty unreal experience when you’re standing at the top looking down on the course.
“The nerves are there and it’s kind of like ‘What am I going to experience?’ It’s unreal. You can’t really describe it.”
You wear the same equipment as you would if you play hockey, but Treweeke says there are some specific abilities you have to have to compete in Crashed Ice.
“You’ve got to be quick and agile for sure. You’ve got to have some strong turning and able to lie on your belly [and get up quickly].”
Treweeke went to the finals in Quebec City last year, but didn’t have a great run. This year he’s hoping to do a lot better.
The qualifier registration lottery ends tomorrow night.
