TORONTO (NEWS1130) – The CFL announced its outstanding player finalists, and three BC Lions made the cut for the year-end awards.
Lions kick returner Tim Brown is the West Division’s nominee for Special Teams Player, while tackle Jovan Olafioye is up for his second consecutive Outstanding Lineman selection, and defensive lineman Jabar Westerman is the finalist as Outstanding Rookie.
Brown was second in combined yards behind the Toronto Argo‘s Chad Owens and third among CFL punt returners.
Olafioye was part of a Lions offensive line that was tops in the league in yards per game and rushing yards.
Westerman — taken second overall by BC in the CFL Canadian College Player Draft — had a brilliant rookie season, recording 14 defensive tackles and four sacks.
Travis Lulay was passed over for the West Division Most Outstanding Player nod. Calgary running back Jon Cornish will battle Toronto’s Owens for the top honour.
Cornish, a native of New Westminster, could become the first Canadian to win the CFL most outstanding player since Tony Gabriel (1978) and Russ Jackson (1969, 1966, 1963).
Edmonton’s JC Sherritt beat out the Lions’ Adam Bighill for the CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player nomination. Sherritt is up against Richmond native Shea Emry of the Montreal Alouettes.
The winners will be announced at the 2012 Gibson’s Finest CFL Awards during Grey Cup week in Toronto.
