Coroner’s inquest begins two years after death in Coquitlam

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Today marks the first day of a coroner’s inquest that’s partly looking into the way mental health issues are responded to.
It follows the fiery death of a mother from Coquitlam two years ago.
Colette Salemink died when her house was burned down by her son, Blake, in April 2010. He was later charged with arson and manslaughter but was found not criminally responsible because he suffers from schizophrenia.
The inquest heard suggestions there’s been a history of domestic violence to which police were often called. In fact, Mounties responded to a call related to threats just a day and a half before the fire.
The inquest runs through Thursday, when a jury is expected to make recommendations to prevent deaths from similar situations.
