Are men really bad gift-givers?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – “Lazy, thoughtless, brainless?” Are men really such poor gift-givers?

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming up, a new survey is busting some old Christmas shopping stereotypes.

An online retailer has released a survey that suggests 85 per cent of men think it’s important a loved one be happy with the gift they’re given and a majority want the gift to be thoughtful and memorable.

“Guys have this misnomer that they are bad gift-givers; they have always had a bad rap that maybe they’re not as sensitive or keen because there’s this stereotype we always buy a bad gift,” says Murray Milthorpe, CEO of lifeExperiences.ca.

“But the interesting part in our survey is that guys want to be great gift givers. Forty-nine per cent of men actually go out and make a list, prepare themselves and go out and shop from that list to try to buy that perfect gift for their loved one,” he explains.

So, intentions start out well. But perhaps the follow-through could be better.

“Maybe they go out last minute, they might have their list with them but they go into that store last minute to shop and that size or colour of outfit is not there…. That’s when the panic sets in and they make that last-minute purchase that puts their judgement and thoughtfulness into question,” chuckles Milthorpe.

So, when you’re opening that gift, remember ladies, the thought is there… it’s just the timing might have been a little off.
