Thunderbird Elementary cleared after lockdown

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A lot of parents were a little on edge after learning Thunderbird Elementary in Vancouver was under lockdown yesterday.

Police wouldn’t elaborate on the details about the threats they received, but they decided to spend the day at the school.

It was under a code-yellow from 11a.m to 3 p.m. An announcement was made and the students were kept in their classrooms, explains Kurt Heinrich with the Vancouver School Board.

“For us, it was an affirmation around the security protocols and the procedures we have in place. Everything ran very efficiently, very smoothly… and we feel that it’s better to be safe than sorry with these sort of circumstances.”

Vancouver Police Constable Randy Fincham understands it might be alarming for parents to see officers in the building.

“This is something that is at the tip of everyone’s conscience right now. We’re, rightfully, very sensitive to it and when we send kids to school, we’re expecting those kids to be safe.”
