SURREY(NEWS1130) – Close to 200 people lined-up the lobby at Surrey City Hall last night to speak at a public hearing on the controversial South Surrey Entertainment Complex.
One-hundred and twelve were speaking in support; another 70 were against the $100-million project slated for an area near 10th Avenue and 168th Street.
Brent is a family therapist and says he’s seen how casinos destroy families. “A casino is a delivery system custom-designed for the gambling addiction.”
Kevin is youth pastor who says he’s seen gambling destroy some of his students’ lives. “She’s kind of gone through starting at the age of nine, just experiencing her father and his addiction and how it’s brought destruction to the family.”
Others are okay with the casino. They just don’t like the location.
But Paul sees dollar signs and jobs.
“Economics, you’re bringing in a number revenue, you’ve got $86-million dollars being spent by Surrey people and roughly the revenue from that is ten per cent,” he tells us.
Others in favour of the project feel the casino will also promote tourism.
