PENDLETON, OR. (NEWS1130) – The local driver who was behind the wheel when that BC tour bus plunged down an embankment in Oregon last month has now been banned from driving commercial vehicles in the US.
Nine people died and dozens of others were hurt.
The US Department of Transportation says Haeng Kyu Hwang was driving too fast for the conditions and ignored federal limits on work hours. The ban also covers a second driver who is employed by Coquitlam-based Mi Joo Tours.
Police have not said what caused the December 30th crash.
Earlier this week, two BC passengers who survived the crash, filed a lawsuit against the tour bus company and the driver. They claim the driver was too tired, was speeding, failed to obey road signs and operated a vehicle contrary to restrictions on his driver’s license.
