VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The nine candidates hoping to lead the Liberal Party in the next federal election debated for the first time in Vancouver today.
Almost 900 people packed the Westin Bayshore to hear them speak on various issues.
Montreal MP Justin Trudeau spoke about the need for party unity. “The challenge of leadership is to take that energy and translate it into something positive, translate it into solutions rather than playing divisive games like Mr. Harper is doing.”
News1130 spoke to party supporters in the lobby of the hotel like Robin who says he’s looking for big changes and a leader who will commit to the party in the long term.
“They took a big hit in the last election and if they’re going to change their approach to politics. They need a new fresh kind of leadership.”
He says the environmental issue matters to him, especially how Canada handles natural resources like lumber and oil.
Others feel strongly about First Nations relationships, the economy and policy matters.
This is the of first of five leadership debates to be held across the country. A leader is expected to be chosen in the spring.
