VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – This is the first tax season we don’t need a PIN to file online.
All you need is your Social Insurance Number, your date of birth, and your address to file. But that’s making some people feel uneasy, and fearing someone else can get their refund.
It seems the Canada Revenue Agency is relaxing security while other countries are increasing it.
It’s now a $5 billion dollar problem for the IRS, so big the American agency is scrambling to increase security.
NDP CRA critic Murrary Rankin says the CRA’s move makes no sense.
“I think it’s because they’ve cut $100 million from their budget and fired 3,000 people over three years. They’re simply scrambling at the moment,” he says.
“They’re aware of the American problems, that the IRS has encountered. I think there’s a study going on right now within the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s office, to see if the kind of protections that are available are adequate,” he adds.
The Canada Revenue Agency declined requests for an interview, but says in a statement it does validate your ID before paying out and your information is safe.
