Local boxer gets to keep his million dollar award

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A local boxer gets to keep his million dollars in damages, awarded to him after a car accident five years ago.

The BC Court of Appeal has sided with a jury, which arrived at the million dollar amount after a trial last year.

According to some, Jegbefumere ‘Bone’ Albert was on his way to becoming the next Mohammed Ali. He had been a successful amateur boxer, and had turned pro before a car accident in Burnaby in 2008 mangled his right hand.

He took ICBC to court after it had offered only $50,000 for his injuries.

After the jury awarded the million dollars in damages, ICBC sought a new trial, but the court of appeal has upheld the previous ruling.

Albert is still hoping to resurrect his boxing career. In an interview last year, he said the money could help him get proper therapy for his hand, so that he can make a comeback.

The award is considered one of the largest court-determined settlements involving the insurance company.
