VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A powerful documentary that tells the stories of people from the Lower Mainland who’ve lost loved ones to murder premiered in downtown Vancouver last night.
Aftermath of Murder: Survivor Stories deals with loss, grief, trauma, and healing.
Allen Sawkins’ partner Tony McNaughton was killed trying to defend a co-worker in Vancouver 13 years ago.
“[I was told that] unfortunately, he died. When that happens, it’s like you’re just thrust into a wall with force speed — bang!”
“Your physical body just goes numb and you just have no idea what to do next,” describes Sawkins.
BC Victims of Homicide says what often happens is after the media gets those details and moves on, the family members are left to grieve; Producer Brent Stafford tells us that’s why they made the film.
“In 2007 to 2011, there were 493 murders in British Columbia… that’s over 60,000 people directly affected… You find out, ‘Wow, there are a lot more people that have been touched by homicide than we think there are.'”
