VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Last night’s leaders’ debate has left some groups wondering ‘What about us?”.
Among the topics not brought up: education and transportation.
BC Teachers Federation President-elect Jim Iker is among those who watched the debate from home, only to discover education was not brought up, something he calls a glaring oversight.
“The issue of education is a high priority with a lot of parents and the public and our teachers.”
Iker says surveys highlight the importance of education. “In our poll, we know 67 per cent of the people think improving public education should be a higher priority of any government.”
Richard Walton, who chairs the region’s Mayors Council, would have liked to have heard something about transportation.
“It would have been nice to see on a broad level perhaps last night, the question asked or perhaps some extensive conversation on how do we fund transportation in general within the province.”
However, Walton is not entirely surprised transportation didn’t come up.
“I know there’s some sensitivity in the rest of the province certainly to funds from provincial sources being applied to Metro Vancouver transportation needs.”
