VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you just can’t decide whether you’ll be celebrating Cinco de Mayo or Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you) this weekend, why not combine them?
Think Obi ‘Juan’ Kenobi with a sombrero and lightsaber sipping on a Tatooine Sunrise with two shots of tequila for the planet’s two suns.
“This does actually exist, people are doing this in the US and elsewhere,” laughs party planner Brenda Nicholas with Lua Weddings and Events.
“You can easily combine Star Wars and Cinco de Mayo into a single party this weekend, call it Star Wars de Mayo, and the first thing you want to do is ask all of your guests to come as their favourite Star wars character, but with a twist,” she tells News1130.
“Set up a photo station where they can take pictures using Mexican props like a poncho, a sombrero, fake paper moustaches taped to sticks that they can hold up. That can be a keepsake that you can email to them or print off.”
If you’d like to indulge in some La Guerra de las Galaxias munchies (maybe something other than Aunt Beru’s blue milk) Nicholas suggests little Death Star quesadillas or red and green pepper cut into “veggie sabres.”
“Piñatas are popular on Cinco de Mayo. You can easily pick up a Darth Vader piñata at a local party store and get your guests to whack it with a light sabre. Another one is pin the tail on the donkey with twist — you can pin the staff on Yoda or pin the tail on a tauntaun,” Nicholas chuckles.
Mexico has cantinas, and so does Star Wars.
“The Mos Eisley cantina! Just transform your space into that cantina. Keep it dimly lit but add some pops of Mexican colour. Serve great drinks and have a prize for best costume,” she adds.
Don’t forget to add some musical ambience. YouTube is a great place to find the Star Wars soundtrack covered by mariachi bands. “Que la Fuerza te acompañe” in your party plans.
