Families of four Robert Pickton victims are heading to court

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The children of four missing women killed by Robert Pickton have filed lawsuits against the province, the City of Vancouver, Robert Pickton, his brother and his sister.

The daughters and sons of Dianne Rock, Sarah de Vries, Cynthia Feliks and Yvonne Boen are looking for compensation.

A public inquiry was held into the case and Commissioner Wally Oppal had made the recommendation to compensate the children of the women who had been murdered.

“The city, despite initially saying that it was prepared to do so and the province which has never made a commitment either way, have allowed that recommendation to languish and haven’t acted on it,” says Jason Gratl, the lawyer representing the families.

Gratl says the children have filed the suit in order to be put back in the financial position they would have been in had their mothers not been killed.

The statements of claim say there were a number of failures on the part of Vancouver police, RCMP and the Crown, including that police didn’t warn women in the Downtown Eastside that a serial killer may have been targeting women in the area.
