STOCKHOLM, SE (NEWS1130) – Canada has been eliminated from medal contention at the IIHF World Hockey Championship after a 3-2 shootout loss to host Sweden. Canucks forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin got a rare opportunity in the shootout but missed both their attempts.
It’s the fourth year in a row that Canada has failed to get past the quarterfinal stage. Fredrik Petterson scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout for Sweden while Nicklas Danielsoon scored both of Swedens goals in regulation. Daniel Sedin picked up an assist.
After allowing just one powerplay goal in the preliminary round in their opening game against Denmark, Sweden scored both their goals against Canada with the man advantage. Canada got goals from Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Alex Edler’s spring debut with Sweden lasted just over 15 minutes when the Canucks defenceman was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for a knee-on-knee hit on Canadian captain Eric Staal. Staal had to be helped off the ice and was in considerable pain.
Sweden faces Finland Saturday in one of the tournament semifinals while upstart Switzerland will meet the United States. The Swiss reach the final four at the event for the first time since 1998.
