VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The author of “The Notorious Bacon Brothers” says it was a rare move for Jarrod Bacon’s conspiracy sentence to be extended this week.
Bacon was handed two more years to his 12 years behind bars. Jerry Langton says the extended sentence could have a number of impacts. “I think the Bacon brothers, as far as a unit, are finished.”
He says it’s likely their associates will also rise in the ranks. “The street gangs and, even higher up, are really falling onto two sides. That’s what is causing the violence. What we’re seeing in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland over the last 10 years is symptomatic of the future of the rest of the country.”
“It’s funny because you see criminals, even from Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, some of them will have 30-year sentences, some of them will be shot to death in and out of their car, but still it doesn’t act as a deterrent. These kids are joining up, making money, and thinking nothing is going to happen to them,” he adds.
In May 2012, Bacon was sentenced to 12 years for conspiring to traffic 100 kilograms of cocaine from Mexico into Canada.
During an appeal of the sentence, the Crown argued Bacon received a jail term that didn’t properly reflect the scope of the crime. It had wanted Bacon’s sentence to be increased to 20 years.
