VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Rush hour is about to get a whole lot easier now that the Cape Horn Interchange is a construction free zone for the first time in more than two years.
The opening means a direct route from the westbound Mary Hill Bypass to Lougheed Highway.
That means no more detouring along United Boulevard.
The move should eliminate bottlenecks says Kim Seale with the News1130 Air Patrol. “I think people are going to have big smiles on their faces, there’s been really a lot of tough driving through that Coquitlam area, everyone’s been pushed down to the Brunette interchange and that’s been just horrible.”
She says it’s been a long time coming. “That’s been the longest closure of all the ramps for that Cape Horn. That was the one that shut down first when they started the big tear down and rebuild.”
She expects it may take a day or two for drivers to get used to the new configuration but Greg Johnson with the Highway 1 Improvement Project says it should be a breeze from now on.
“Previously what used to take minutes to do, you’ll be able to do in seconds,” he says.
While it will go a long way towards easing rush-hour congestion, Seale says there is still one other sore spot facing commuters. “Man we could sure use those extra lanes through the Burnaby-Vancouver stretch, that would sure help out for the backups we’re getting in the mornings and afternoons.”
