New Oiler deal for Burnaby’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

By

EDMONTON (NEWS1130) –  Burnaby native Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has agreed to a new seven-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers worth $42 million.

The former Burnaby and North Shore Winter Club minor hockey product is entering his third year in the NHL after Edmonton drafted him first overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Nugent-Hopkins, 20, recorded 18 goals and 52 points in 62 games in his rookie season, and followed up with four goals and 24 points in 40 games last season, a year cut short by shoulder surgery in April.

With the signing, the Oilers have three of their star forwards under contract for an identical $6 million per season with Jordan Eberle’s current deal set to expire in 2019, and Taylor Hall’s in 2020.

Edmonton hosts the Canucks Saturday in the return match of Wednesday’s 4-1 Oilers’ preseason victory at Rogers Arena.
