VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Think of it as another way to save for a rainy day; the Canadian Taxpayers Federation wants you to be able to access your EI contributions if you become unemployed.
The CTF says it’s about time different parts of the country started taking care of themselves. BC Director Jordan Bateman argues the current system isn’t fair at all.
“You have a person who becomes unemployed in Vancouver, who isn’t eligible for EI, but if they’d worked the same amount of hours at the same rate in Newfoundland [and] Labrador, they would actually be eligible for as many as 35 weeks.”
“So, what what we’re proposing is that instead of sending that money to Ottawa, we should be mandated to put it in to a savings account… like an RSP, that Canadians could dip into whenever they did need unemployment support.”
Bateman adds any leftover money in the account could add to your nest egg when you retire.
