LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – A space heater has been blamed on a fourplex fire that killed one person in Langley Thursday night.
Calls like this do increase as the temperatures drop says Langley Township Assistant Fire Chief Pat Walker.
He points out there wasn’t enough distance between the space heater and other materials surrounding it when the fire broke out.
“Blankets, clothes, a lot of content in this particular bedroom because the unit was so small. It is crucial that you maintain that space separation between the heater and combustibles,” he says.
“Each heater manufacturer has their own specifications but usually it’s anywhere between 17 to 24 inches.”
He says they also haven’t been able to find a working smoke detector.
A second person has life threatening injuries, and a third was taken to hospital but is expected to survive.
