Black Friday shoppers kept their cash in Canada

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A lot of your Black Friday and Cyber Monday dollars were spent in this country.
Spending jumped 19 per cent and Cyber Monday soared 29 per cent.
President of Shelfspace Mark Startup says campaigns to keep you from crossing the border seem to be working.
“While competition increases in Canada and more foreign retailers come to Canada, Canadians are finding the goods that they previously couldn’t find, or were too expensive in this country. As a result they are choosing to stay home and purchase those goods.”
He says businesses are now fully deciding to embrace these shopping days the way American companies have done for years.
“Most Canadians, and there is research to back this up, like to shop locally. They feel that the prices have become more competitive in Canada over the past few years.”
Department stores benefited the most followed by specialty retail.
One dip though was in electronics. Radio, TV and stereo sales saw a 35 per cent drop year-over-year.
