VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We are just 16 sleeps away from the big day, but chances are you or your neighbours have already decorated your Christmas Tree.
We’re finding out about some safety tips, as well as how sales have been so far.
This past weekend was a busy one at Pine Meadows Tree Farms and Tim Loewen says he’s seeing a general trend of people getting ready for Christmas earlier.
“Generally, people are buying bigger trees than they used to because ceilings are getting higher… narrow and tall is good, right now,” he tells us.
“A lot of people know the variety that they want, they know where they cut their tree last year and they want to go get the one that’s right beside it or whatever,” he chuckles.
When it comes to decoration, Captain Gabe Roder with Vancouver Fire says LED lights are the safest choice. “Using the newer LED-type lights is very, very safe, but we still recommend that whenever you leave the room, unplug the tree.”
He notes if your tree is real, you should be watering it. “Keep it away from any combustible items. Keep it away from any means of heat — for example, not close to the fireplace.
“The number one thing we want people to remember is this time of year is meant to be fun and festive; we certainly don’t want any tragedies.”
As for candles, Roder says you should never put them on your tree.
