Canucks shut down Flames for third straight win

CALGARY, AB (NEWS1130) – Eddie Lack turned aside all 18 shots he faced and the Canucks got goals from Jannik Hansen and Mike Santorelli as Vancouver beat the Calgary Flames 2-0 in its first game in a week.

Lack was making his first start since Roberto Luongo was injured in the Canucks’ final game before the Christmas break. He improved his record to 7-2-0 with two shutouts in his rookie year.

The win extended the Canucks’ streak to three games. They beat the Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets in their final two games before the break. Vancouver is 10-1-1 in December with one game left to play.

Vancouver got an early chance to open the scoring when Brian McGrattan took a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for an elbow on defenceman Andrew Alberts. Alberts left the game and did not return. The Canucks were unable to capitalize on the extended powerplay though.

The Canucks finally got the opening goal in the final minute of the first period. Henrik Sedin fed a terrific pass to spring Hansen for a breakaway. Hansen lost the puck for a split second before regaining control and then ripping a wrist shot past Reto Berra.

Neither team scored in the second period as Berra had to be sharp to keep the Flames in the game. Vancouver led 24-8 in the shot department after 40 minutes.

The Canucks got the insurance goal with a little over two minutes to go. Ryan Kesler stole the puck and set-up Santorelli for his ninth tally of the season.

Vancouver received an injury scare before the game even began. Captain Henrik Sedin took a puck off the head in warm-up, which split his ear. He had stitches before extending his ironman streak to 669 consecutive games played.

The Canucks return home to host the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.
