VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s retail sector had its biggest gain year-to-date in November of last year. Compared to a year earlier retailers in this province had a 4.3 per cent sales increase to $5.37 billion, building on October’s 3.3 per cent gain. The first five months of the year produced no increases.
Statistics Canada says the gain was partly due to higher sales at department stores. Many local retailers held Black Friday sales on this side of the border to coincide with the US Thanksgiving holiday in an attempt to win back cross-border shoppers.
Nationwide, retail sales rose 3.1 per cent to $41 billion, that was led by motor vehicles.
BC reported the largest increase in dollar terms, followed by Quebec.
