Target offering free credit monitoring after security breach

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Following a major security breach at its US stores, Target is offering some Canadian customers a special deal.
Millions of people were affected, reigniting the conversation on how people can better protect themselves.
Jeff Schwartz with the Consolidated Credit Counselling Services of Canada says fraudsters will stop at nothing to get your information.
He says one thing you can do is constantly check your credit account for suspicious charges. “We want to check our credit scores on a regular basis just to make sure there are no inaccurate notations or anything that has been merged onto our account that doesn’t belong to us.”
He adds if you’re online shopping, be extra cautious and only use trusted websites.
Target is giving some of the affected Canadians free credit monitoring for a year.
The arts and crafts chain Michael’s is warning customers to double check their finances after learning that hackers have compromised its credit card system.
It’s now working with both the Secret Service and outside experts on how the data breach even happened.
The company is based out of Texas.
