TV Blog Buzz: Why there’s so much nudity on cable shows like ‘Game of Thrones’

By

The frequent nudity on cable TV shows such as “Game of Thrones,” “Girls” and “Masters of Sex” has some viewers wondering why so many hit series are seemingly trying to outdo each other when it comes to titillation.

According to Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the hot new series “True Detective,” nudity is essentially required nowadays on channels like HBO and Showtime.

“There is a clear mandate in pay-cable for a certain level of nudity. Now, you’re not going to get our two lead movie stars to go full-frontal, but we at least got Matthew’s butt in there,” Pizzolatto says in an interview with Buzzfeed.

“There’s not a great deal of nudity in the series at all, though, compared to other shows on pay-cable. I’d be happy with none. Seems to me if people want to see naked people doing it, there’s this thing called ‘the Internet.'”

Pizzolatto also talks about Sunday’s season finale and criticisms that the show is misogynist. Spoiler alert!

Still haven’t seen “The Sopranos” and thinking about bingeing on it?

Show creator David Chase doesn’t really approve.

Binge watching is one of the topics Chase discussed alongside Steve Buscemi during an hour-long chat at New York’s Greene Space studio.

Indiewire recapped the discussion — in which the stars discuss the so-called golden age of TV that’s produced beloved shows such as “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men” — and there’s also a link to video of the event.
